Are You Ready?

Are you a first time ferret owner? Maybe it has just been a long time. None the less, how do you know if you are ready. Fill out this questionair to get an idea. When adopting to first time owners, the rescue often asks applicants to fill out this questionair.

  1. Why a ferret?

  2. What is your age? Or are you still living at home .... I will need parental approval prior to adoption if you are still living at home or are under 18 years of age.

  3. Are there young children in your home? Their ages?

  4. What other pets do you own?

  5. Have you had a ferret(s) previously? Do you still have it (them)? If yes, what are their ages, if not, what became of it (them)?

  6. Are you prepared for a commitment of five (5) to eight (8) years?

  7. Who is your veterinarian?

  8. Is he or she experienced in caring for ferrets?

  9. Are you prepared to change and find a veterinarian who is experienced with ferrets (not many vets are available with these skills)?

  10. Are you aware of the cost of health maintenance and possible surgery which may be required?

  11. Ferrets require an annual check-up with shots and many require surgery later in life at a cost of $300 -$350. Can you afford this?

  12. Are you aware that a ferret cannot live in a cage? They must have time to run and play unconfined by a cage - they can be house wreckers if you are not prepared for their antics.

  13. Are you blessed with a "Green Thumb"? Ferrets find a plant a particularly great challenge - along with your socks, shoes, TV remote controls, cordless phones, etc.

  14. Are you willing to adopt a "disadvantaged" ferret (an older ferret, or one with a disability?)

  15. Please be aware that having a pet ferret is nothing like a cat or a dog - ferret proofing your home is most important for the life and health of your pet. Now, are you ready for a ferret?
